(Sung in Amazigh):
Where do you want us to go?
Give me your hand
So we can go to Benghazi
The City of Freedom
So we can go to Zawiya
The City of Marytyrs
So we can go to Zintan
The City of Knights
And in the end Libya will be free, and we will live in love and tranquility

Question: Can he convert to Libyan, too?

Masha’Allaa, so preciousss <3
And now it’s like war! Rebels! Death! Tanks and guns!
And I feel like Libyan culture and life and the spirit of the people is being hijacked by this war— by photos of little boys carrying guns and bloody bodies and dusty barren landscapes. And I wish you all knew Libya as I knew it— not as this volatile war zone but as a place of beautiful things and beautiful people and the most delicious food you’ve ever tasted. I wish I could take you all down Shara’a Dubai and then Shara’a I’shreen and then we could take a hike in Shahat and marvel at the Greco-Roman ruins, and follow that up with a swim in Soussa. I wish I could introduce you to my grandfather— who’s living through his second Libyan war— and I wish you could hear him tell stories about walking out of his house seconds before it blew up. I wish you could meet my cousins, my little baby cousins for whom my heart aches at the thought of them wielding guns and straddling tanks, and we could all go get some gelato at the local halwani and drink espresso from a little cart on Shara3 Pepsi. But you can’t. And that’s why you have to take my word for it. Libya is more than Gaddafi. Libya is more than this war. Libya is more than tribal systems. Libya is more than its broken buildings and its desert landscapes. Libya is sun-kissed skin; gentle waves caressing neverending shores; watermelon as sweet as sugar cane; clear, starry skies… Libya is cool Mediterranean nights; busy, bustling markets; scruffy-haired a’amus smiling gap-toothed smiles; sweet tea sipped with ka’ak… Libya is a people who looked towards heaven and thought it didn’t look so far away— thought the horizon was close enough they could touch it. Breathed in revolution and exhaled freedom. And they have dreams and hopes and desires that don’t involve wielding guns and riding tanks.
